LOOSING IT ALL AND GAINING EVERYTHING: LIZ MURRAY INSPIRED

For those of us who know what it means to have had absolutely nothing, also understand that through it lies an absolute truth about the world.

In a way its sort of freeing letting go of all the material things in life and embracing only what is needed.

There's a sense of God in it, for you discover what is truly important and go towards it with all of your strength and might.

You are a witness to the immense cold and warmth the world is capable of.

There are no fake friends, or TV commercials, there's no relationship issues to speak of, or Internet to surf, there are no bills to worry about; only real.

Life happens on the other end of the spectrum and your an observer to it.

All distractions disappear along with the endless servitude to the great machine of life.

You become aware of living and what it truly means to feel alive.

I wouldn't wish it upon a single soul, but those of us lucky enough to have gone through it and succeed possess a great gift that very few are capable of attaining.

We look at these individuals and we feel sorry for them, we think to ourselves how crazy it would be to go through life this way.

And yet we're the ones who search for answers that will never be found and want endlessly without satisfaction.

Maybe these helpless cases have merely claimed to be content. They saw the rules in which to win or loose and opted not to play at all.

Maybe they look at all of us as the helpless cases and it's them who feel sorry.

EXPERT APPEAL

When appealing to the masses gurus and experts will often position themselves as your peer rather than a figure of authority.

They might use words like we, or us, or our in order to build a relationship with you for the simple fact that we're  more apt to listen to our friends than someone in a position of power.

The belief is that you can't advice people: "I already knew that, thank you very much."

Why then might we feel the need to portray ourselves as experts when in fact we know very little.

Think of all the things we might miss out on if we presume to "know-it-all"

Maybe, we could all work to be experts in listening, and take an interest in 'interesting' instead.

TAKEPLACE IS WELL LIKED

We know it doesn't mean much, but we're still excited about it.

Here's to a small victory we hope you'll continue to take an interest.

A DINOSAUR TALE

The long tail of search is where I live.

While others are stuck on page 1 I'm finding the next big thing on 99.

The long tail is where new markets emerge and creativity exists.

I don't care about rankings or popularity.

I care about  rare because rare is valuable.

To bottle the long tail is to own the future.

So enjoy today while I plan tomorrow.

WHAT YOU NEED DOESN'T SELL

Often the things we need aren't sexy enough to gain our dollars and attention.

Maybe we shy away from the need industry, because it implies that people are incapable of knowing something that is so inherently obvious. Any attempt to market it, and we're met with stiff opposition, or worse completely ignored.

I'm reminded of Rosie O'Donnell's magazine "Rosie" which tried to highlight a more wholesome side of Hollywood and fame. Rosie wanted to tackle important social and political issues which ultimately drove magazines sales from 700,000 copies to 300,000 in just a years time.

The whole ordeal wound up in court ultimately ending in a stalemate; it seemed that good and evil would be left to fight another day. In the court of public opinion on the other hand, Rosie never fully recovered.

Funny, Rosie's only goal was to inject a little humanity into the world, something I think we could all hope to do a little more off. Did she make herself an easy target; perhaps, did she deserve what she got; not in this blogger's opinion, not by a long shot.

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE

BIOGRAPHY

William Kentridge was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1955. He attended the University of the Witwatersand, Johannesburg (1973-76), Johannesburg Art Foundation (1976-78), and studied mime and theater at L’ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq, Paris (1981-82), Having Witnessed first-hand one of the twentieth century’s most contentious struggles-the dissolution of apartheid, Kentridge brings the ambiquity and subtlety of personal experience to public subjects most often framed in narrowly defined terms. Using film, drawing, sculpture, animation, and performance, he transmutes sobering political events into powerful poetic allegories. In a now-signature technique, he photographs his charcoal drawings and paper collages over time, recording scenes as they evolve. Working without a script or storyboard, he plots out each animated film, preserving every, addition and erasure. Aware of myriad ways in which we construct the world by looking, Kentridge uses stereoscopic viewers and creates optical illusions with anamorphic projection to extend his drawings-in-time into three dimensions. Kentridge has had major exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2009); and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2004), among others. He has also participated in Prospect.1 New Orleans (2008); the Sydney Biennale (1996, 2008); and Documenta (1997, 2002). His opera and theater works, often produced in collaboration with Handspring Puppet Company, have appeared at Brooklyn Academy of Music (2007); Standard Bank National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, South Africa (1992, 1996, 1998); and Festival d’ Avignon, France (1995, 1996). His production of Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera, The Nose, will premeire at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in conjunction with a retrospective organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010), William Kentridge lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

YOU'LL NEVER REALLY KNOW SOMEONE

As we're required to ingest more information, and preform an ever increasing number of tasks we loose our ability to form deep and personal relationships. We become overstimulated, and in an attempt to make things easier on ourselves we organize the people around us by labeling them.

HOW MANY TIMES HAS SOMEONE LABELED YOU INCORRECTLY?

Humans are complex things, it takes a lot of time, energy, and attention to form a deep and personal relationship with someone, and it's simply not on the to do list.

I've associated a value for you, and now everything you do and say will somehow be related back to this first initial label. The actions of that person take on the meaning of the label in some abstract way and allow for a lot of miscommunication and lack of understanding.

Much in the same way our brain processes sight, so do we try to fill in the gaps about a person with details that might not actual be true or factual.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing as it stimulates the cognitive part of our brains, but the fact remains in doing so we'll never fully know or understand someone.

So, the question we should be asking ourselves is whether or not it's worth trying to be understood, and if the answers is no, should we care what anyone thinks?

Also by labeling someone, and associating their actions to a word; does the word take on a new definition or meaning, serving to only further the problem?

SKIPPING THE HOLIDAYS

For those of you who participated in Christmas I assure you I mean no disrespect, I merely have a different way of looking at the occasion and holidays in general.

Christmas among other days were created by businesses to entice you to buy more things you don't really need. If the day is to celebrate one of the most selfless individuals in history (Jesus) do you really think it should be spent honoring consumerism?

Once a year we meet and exchange gifts not out of the goodness of our hearts, but out of guilt. We haven't kept in touch or been as close to our loved ones as we'd like so "Christmas" is the perfect way to make up for the uncomfortable truth.

What If We Skipped Christmas?

Instead, we chose not to indulge in this silliness and spent our time doing something productive. While you're off relaxing, the opposition is working. They've noticed the opportunity to get ahead and they're seizing it.

What if, we kept up with our loved ones year around, and worked to give them the things they want and need as they arose rather than waiting for this once a year occasion.

We celebrated the things we have, and if we felt so inclined to take time off we did it trying something new. So, save your present money and take that trip you always wanted, go sky diving, or bungee jumping just make sure to invite your closest loved ones along for the ride. I wont judge you.

Maybe that makes me a Grinch, but that's the way I'll be spending the holidays this year, seems a lot more fulfilling to me, but I have been wrong before.

IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU IT'S ABOUT THEM

By making the topic of our focus about others it allows for a few interesting things to occur. We're able to separate ourselves from the rest of society, and thus "the game of life." If we're merely analyzing the activities and actions of others we're able to take the risk out of playing. We neither create, succeed, or fail, we simply understand the all important question of "why." This has become possible more so than ever before with the digital era that we live in. Now, every site you visit requires you to make a profile and disclose more and more information about yourself. Social media allows you to express every little thought and emotion you might feel; all of which is taken and used against you; either by reaping the benefits of that great idea you had, or leveraging some incriminating thing you might have said or done. Either way put your poker faces on and distrust what you cannot see or verify for yourself. Start paying for things with cash, and discuss business face to face. Write that great idea down the old fashion way (paper and pencil) and stop giving away what makes you valuable and rare. So you might create life rather than serve it.

There's a great quote I'm going to butcher that states "I do not want to be apart of any group that would have me as a member." So be weary of free memberships and logins; who's to say their motivations are well intentioned; personally I'd rather be safe than sorry, but thats just me.

DEFINING BRAND

The perception, in the mind of Consumers, Prospects, Aspirants or even the on-lookers.

The success of the brand lies in aligning all perceptions to the perception the owner wants to

create. it's not all about customers and transaction. We ought not forget that the brand (any brand)

should also inspire a perception or belief internally. Those within the organisation will more readily

pull the wagon if they like where it's heading.

STANDING OUT IS OVER RATED

1.Standout
2.Be yourself
3.Be truthful
4.Express yourself
5.Specialize

Sounds great huh, and you might be right if they weren't the exact things holding you back. While your busy being an honest and sincere person, people in power are doing anything but. If they're putting a lot of time and energy into "breaking the rules" why aren't you? What if instead we sought to change them. By setting the rules to win how could we ever loose?

If we look at many of the highly successful people in the world whether they're actors, musicians, techies, politicians, models, etc. their rewarded for their ability to lie and play a part (blend in). It reminds me of a book I read about the Art of Deception, which states that only by taking this counter cultural approach are you truly able to ride yourself of influence and thus control. Some go as far as to incorporate it into their dress, like Mr. Steve Jobs over here.

Now,  I understand this might be unsettling to some, but the fact remains; by rejecting the influences of society you're then capable of freethought. If you ever aspire to be successful and truly free I advice you to take a further look into the subject so that you might protect yourself with these revolutionary tactics.

MUSIC IS DEAD THE RE-RUN

As marketers we know the general public would rather live in a lie than know the truth. The lie is seductive, it's everything you want to hear, and often played to your favorite beat.

The music industry has recognized your need for music and positioned themselves as gatekeepers to success. By driving the price of music down towards zero it allows for a few interesting things to occur.

First, by making it low cost, it's easily produced and distributed. Now, your message can reach the world in an instant.

Why might this be important?
Record labels realized that musicians are simply opportunities for permission. They've earned your trust and your heart which then allows them to speak to you about certain things. They sell you on a rich and lavish lifestyle while plugging various products and brands in a rather contagious and ingenious way.

Since music fails to be profitable record labels know that it has to be a platform for something bigger. They work to perfect models to turn nobodies into somebodies virtually overnight. Up until now I feel their efforts have been somewhat limited with perfumes and clothing lines, but a few have managed to successfully re-brand themselves in a new and compelling way (Common, 50 Cent, Jay Z, Will Smith, etc.) . The fact that people  believe their favorite artist still writes their own music seems somewhat silly after they've been discovered. They'll go on, and on about the fact that they write every line and spin an amusing tale in an attempt to build trust and loyalty with you; as if this is this is some sort of indicator of trust to begin with, but non the less you fall for it and so it goes.

If you actually pay attention to their lyrics the message becomes even more disturbing. Let me explain; the market has often been referred to as a "cold hearted b**ch" that like a woman you have to respect her, and seduce her in order to lay in bed with her. That being said, the next time you listen to your favorite song and the artist either refers to a woman or a love affair in some way, they're actually speaking directly to you about you. Most of the time they're mocking you, hating you, loving you, or speaking on the loneliness that the top affords for. The fact that people honor these individuals is some what puzzling consider they have no respect for you.

My advice: stop wasting your time, money, and energy on this garbage and put it to better use. Some artist are so cocky as to come right out and tell you without hiding the fact within witty metaphors; most notably Little Wayne and his affiliates Young Money referring to themselves as the "devil" calling his record label the evil empire and throwing it in your face repeatedly while laughing all the way to the bank.

The real question then is whether their intentions were always this ruthless or if we're to blame for their bad attitudes. One things for certain, when people say music is dead you'll know why.

JUST DESSERTS

WHO SHOULD BE HONORED; THE PERSON WHO EXCELS WITHIN THE CURRENT SYSTEM, OR THE ONE WHO SEEKS TO CHANGE IT?

What's interesting about the question are the amount of right answers that seem to follow. "The one who seeks to change the system" they say, but still we manage to fall short when it comes to upholding our decision. Why then do we agree to change only to shut the door when we see it? Is it an attempt to appeal to our peers, signifying that we're new and current (cool) or is it deeper than that displaying the hatred for our current situation. Regardless of the reason when push comes to shove change seems to be the farthest thing from people's minds.

DECEPTION

A BRIEF LOOK INTO LEO STRAUSS PHILOSOPHY

People with the intellect, acuity, and, if necessary, the political commitment, polemical skills, and, above all, the imagination to find the evidence that career intelligence officers could not detect.

The "right" man for Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, suggests Seymour Hersh in his recent New Yorker article entitled 'Selective Intelligence,' was Abram Shulsky, director of the Office of Special Plans (OSP) – an agency created specifically to find the evidence of WMDs and/or links with Al Qaeda, piece it together, and clinch the case for the invasion of Iraq.

Like Wolfowitz, Shulsky is a student of an obscure German Jewish political philosopher named Leo Strauss who arrived in the United States in 1938. Strauss taught at several major universities, including Wolfowitz and Shulsky's alma mater, the University of Chicago, before his death in 1973.

Strauss is a popular figure among the neoconservatives. Adherents of his ideas include prominent figures both within and outside the administration. They include 'Weekly Standard' editor William Kristol; his father and indeed the godfather of the neoconservative movement, Irving Kristol; the new Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, Stephen Cambone, a number of senior fellows at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) (home to former Defense Policy Board chairman Richard Perle and Lynne Cheney), and Gary Schmitt, the director of the influential Project for the New American Century (PNAC), which is chaired by Kristol the Younger.

Strauss' philosophy is hardly incidental to the strategy and mindset adopted by these men – as is obvious in Shulsky's 1999 essay titled "Leo Strauss and the World of Intelligence (By Which We Do Not Mean Nous)" (in Greek philosophy the term nous denotes the highest form of rationality). As Hersh notes in his article, Shulsky and his co-author Schmitt "criticize America's intelligencecommunity for its failure to appreciate the duplicitous nature of the regimes it deals with, its susceptibility to social-science notions of proof, and its inability to cope with deliberate concealment." They argued that Strauss's idea of hidden meaning, "alerts one to the possibility that political life may be closely linked to deception. Indeed, it suggests that deception is the norm in political life, and the hope, to say nothing of the expectation, of establishing a politics that can dispense with it is the exception."

It's hardly surprising then why Strauss is so popular in an administration obsessed with secrecy, especially when it comes to matters of foreign policy. Not only did Strauss have few qualms about using deception in politics, he saw it as a necessity. While professing deep respect for American democracy, Strauss believed that societies should be hierarchical – divided between an elite who should lead, and the masses who should follow. But unlike fellow elitists likePlato, he was less concerned with the moral character of these leaders. According to Shadia Drury, who teaches politics at the University of Calgary, Strauss believed that "those who are fit to rule are those who realize there is no morality and that there is only one natural right – the right of the superior to rule over the inferior."

Rule 1 Deception

This dichotomy requires "perpetual deception" between the rulers and the ruled, according to Drury. Robert Locke, another Strauss analyst says,"The people are told what they need to know and no more." While the elite few are capable of absorbing the absence of any moral truth, Strauss thought, the masses could not cope. If exposed to the absence of absolute truth, they would quickly fall into nihilism or anarchy, according to Drury, author of 'Leo Strauss and the American Right' (St. Martin's 1999).

CLIFF LEE'S NEW NUMBER: 33

Funny, how the biggest moments in life often start with the most mundane turn of events. Early November, Cliff Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker invited his most accomplished client to his office in little rock Arkansas. There, he instructed Lee to jot down a list of teams he would like to play for in order from 1 to 5. At the top of Lee's list were the Philadelphia Phillie's, and the rest is how they say; "history." The deal made public Wednesday, took all of 6 weeks to set in stone; guaranteeing Lee $120 million over the course of the next 5 years for what will undoubtedly be the most exciting season of baseball yet for the organization. Phillie's fans are elated with Lees return and I can't say I blame them.

CLIFF LEE:

"I never wanted to leave in the first place," Lee said. "To get an opportunity to come back and be part of this team and this pitching rotation is going to be something that's historic, I believe."

OPTIMUS 2X

LG LAUNCHES THE FIRST DUAL-CORE SMART PHONE

Sleek and cool on the surface, but reviews on the phone are less than great. Here are a few complaints made about this seemingly breakthrough technology.

REVIEWS

SMOOTH HD FLASH VIDEO in the browser + Power-conscious cores.... thank you Tegra 2.
ask netflix if thats the only negative point of fragmentation

btw the hardware doesnt matter. this phone could have 5 cores and lasers, its the software that matters. a phone is only as fast as the software optimized for the hardware. thats why WP7 with snapdragon is light years faster than any android phone.

There is no way I am buying  such a device, i don't want to be waiting 6 months to get a system upgrade.

Why can't they put a 2200 mAh battery ? What does it add to the thickness? 1 or 2 mm ?

Does anyone know why all manufacturers always put a 1500 mAh battery (at the best)?

fragmentation? expect Jobs to claim that.. and when he announces the dual core expect him to claim that as a world's first too (falsely, like he did with videochat)

TEN YEARS TILL YOUR SUCCESSFUL?

Malcolm Gladwell
With The Time Table For Success

Though Mr. Gladwell's argument is entertaining, it's largely unsupported in his discussions. He offers only a few examples to draw from (largely opinionated,) with an occasional vague reference to psychologists who supposedly echo the same sentiments. I would like to see more support for this argument in the way of facts, but then again I have a problem following the rules: For instance, if you told me it would take 10 years in order to become good let alone great at something, I'd say, I'll tell you at 9. It's important to remember (or catch) the fact that Mr. Gladwell is assuming your only spending four hours a day "practicing" your particular focus in order to reach this conclusion of 10 years. All things aside, it's a clever conversation on the possible factors that play into success.

ELECTRONIC ID'S

Afghanistan is the latest country to implement electronic identification cards for its citizens; a project said to be completed within the next five years and span the entire population. The momentous undertaking didn't come without a price, with a $101.5 million contract with the Afghan company Grand Technology Resources to manufacture the cards. The hope is that the Id's will ensure an accurate and fair election process; but one can't help but wonder if the motivations are completely well intentioned. More On Electronic Id's

POP GOES THE METRODOME

I guess the engineers took a smoke break on disaster planning and prevention day. You'd think being located in Minneapolis would qualify the stadium to withstand anything snow related; that is until old man winter had something to say about it. Luckily no one was hurt in the ordeal and this really cool footage was captured. Check it out.

WHY PEOPLE ARE LIKE FLIES:

There are 120,000 different species of flies they've been around as long          as mankind and have been found in all seven continents. It has been documented that the fly transmits deadly diseases such as typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, yaws, anthrax, leprosy and tuberculosis just to name a few. In many instances, flies are the indirect cause of low cattle weight and poultry death.

TYPES OF FLIES

There are several kinds of flies.

HOUSE FLY

The housefly, Musca domestica, is one of the most common of all insects. It is a worldwide pest in homes, barns, poultry houses, food-processing plants, recreation areas, etc.
House fly eggs are laid in almost any type of warm organic material.Animal or poultry manure is an excellent breeding medium. Decaying vegetation such as grass clippings and garbage can also provide for optimum breeding conditions.
Houseflies are strong fliers and can become widely distributed by flying, wind currents, vehicles and animals. Generally, though, flies are abundant in the immediate vicinity of their breeding site.
STABLE FLY

The stable fly, also known as the dog fly, is a blood-sucking fly. Stable flies primarily attack animals for blood, but in the absence of an animal will also bite humans.
An adult stable fly can fly up to 70 miles from their breeding sites. The stable fly adult is similar to the housefly in size and color. The stable fly, however, has a long bayonet-like mouthpart for sucking blood. Unlike many other fly species, both male and female stable flies suck blood.

Stable fly bites are extremely painful to both man and animal. When hungry, stable flies are quite persistent and will continue to pursue a blood meal even after being swatted several times.

FLESH FLY

Flesh flies are a scavenger fly species that usually feed on meat scraps and dead animal carcasses.

Female flesh flies retain eggs within their bodies until the eggs are ready to hatch.  The larvae are deposited directly onto the food, which the larvae will eat from.  The life cycle for the flesh flies can be completed in 8 to 21 days.

BLOW FLIES AND BOTTLE FLIES

There are quite a few species of blowflies and bottle flies found in and around residences.  Green bottle, blue bottle, and bronze bottle flies may be more abundant in urban areas than houseflies.
Blowflies and bottle flies can breed on dead rodents and birds.  They usually breed in meat scraps, animal excrement, and decaying animal matter around houses.  The adult flies are quite active inside and are strongly attracted to light.
The life cycle usually lasts 9-21 days from egg to adult.
THE HUMAN FLY

These are the worst type of pest, people who can't help but poop and puke everywhere they land. We all have them, friends that feel the need to talk down on everything and everyone. When did being a crappy person become fashionable? There's an epidemic and not enough fly swatters to go around. These infestations cheapen the efforts of others in an attempt to feel better about themselves, sucking the life out of the rest of us (exhausting work.) They have nothing to offer so in an attempt to seem relevant they have to make it appear that everything around them is of little value.
THE SOLUTION

Step One: Go to the cabinet and grab fly swatter firmly in hand.
Step Two: locate the pest.
Step Three: Swing hard and fast aiming for the face of the annoying "Human Fly"
Step Four: Repeat the words "No, no, (it helps to wag your finger, Human Flies are slow so you have to emphasize so they understand) your not allowed to puke and poop on every one's good time. Pests only do one of two things, they escape with their lives or they get eradicated. They certainly don't get to join in the fun.
Step Five: If this doesn't work throw some fly paper on them or feed them shit whatever works.
LIFE'S TOO SHORT TO PUT UP WITH PESTS!
