ACCUSATIVE ABSOLUTE IN GREEK

I will not bear a double sorrow, when I may bear but one. They were cheering each other on, it being impossible by night to communicate by any other means. Atoning in turn blood with blood, since it is this blood-guilt that shakes the city. But brother they disregard, on the ground that friends are made from among their fellow-citizens not from brothers. When this happens great distress comes upon the E. While both divisions had decided to retire, but there was no definite arrangement, the M. started off home.

IT WILL BE SEEN IN EXAMPLE 3

C. pitched camp about three miles from the H. camp. at about 400 paces from that point. The truce shall be valid for a year. Always, by day and night, all chances wait upon us. Whom I had previously indicated as likely to arrive at that hour. You were quaestor fourteen years ago.

SO IMPATIENT

A bunch of virgins standing with momma i hope your tired of waiting b/c i know i am ; !!!

THIS SWEET COMING

Plataea is seventy stades distant from Thebes. Caesar advanced a three days' march. Thus having deigned to reveal thyself to me in this sweet coming. Having wandered over all this foreign land. Marcellus said that it would be to the detriment of Rome if he left Hannibal by so much as a single step.

SHE KNEW HIS NAME WAS TOHAMS STONE

A cross next to the name she took as a sign the patient had succumbed. She found eleven notebooks filled with an economical handwriting with slashing downstrokes, the text dancing just above the lines and obeying no margin save for the edge of the page. For an outwardly silent man, his writing reflected as unexpected volubility. Eventually she found a clean undershirt and shorts. What did it say when a man had fewer clothes than books? Turning him first this way and then that, she changed the sheets beneath him and then dressed him. She knew his name was Thomas Stone because it was inscribed inside the surgical textbook he'd placed at his bedside. In the book she found little about fever with rash, and nothing about seasickness.

S HERO'S INJURY

By evening he was worse. Sister Mary Joseph Praise brought sheets, towels, and broth. Kneeling, she tried to feed him, but the smell of food triggered dry heaves. His eyeballs had sunk into their orbits. His shriveled tongue looked like that of a parrot. She recognized the room's fruity odor as the scent of starvation. When she pinched up a skin fold at the back of his arm and let go, it stayed up like a tent, like the buckled deck. The bucket was half full of clear fluid. He babbled about green fields and was unaware of her presence. Could seasickness be fatal, she wondered. Or could he have a forme fruste of the fever that afflicted Sister Anjali? There was so much she did not know about medicine. In the middle of that ocean surrounded by the sick, she felt the weight of her ignorance.

(i)

Among the Calangute's passengers was a young surgeon-a hawkeyed Englishman who was leaving the Indian Medical Service for better pastures. He was tall and strong, and his rugged features made him look hungry, yet he avoided the dinning room. Sister Mary Joseph Praise had run into him, literally, on the second day of the voyage when she lost her footing on the wet metal stairs leading up from their quarters to the common room. The englishman coming up behind her seized her where he could, in the region of her coccyx and her left rib cage. He righted her as if she were a little child. When she stuttered her thanks, he turned beet red; he was more flustered than she by this unexpected intimacy. She felt a bruising coming on where his hands had clutched her, but there was a quality to this discomfort that she did not mind. For days thereafter, she didn't see the Englishman.

DISSOLVED

By the second night, after ten hours of such close and meditative reading, Sister Mary Joseph Praise suddenly felt print and page dissolve; the boundaries between God and self disintegrated. Reading had brought this: a joyous surrender of her body to the sacred, the eternal, and the infinite.

E

She and Sister Anjali secluded themselves in their cabin, bolting the door against men and sea. Anjali's ejaculatory prayers startled my mother. The ritualized reading of the Gospel of Luke was Sister Anjali's idea; she said it would give wings to the soul and discipline to the body. The two nuns subjected each letter, each word, line, and phrase to dilatatio, elecatio, and excessus-contemplation, elevation, and ecstasy!

CARMELITEN

My mother was God-fearing and churchgoing; in high school she came under the influence of a charismatic Carmelite nun who worked with the poor. My mother's hometown is a city of five islands set like jewels on a ring, facing the Arabian Sea. It was a good thing her parents didn't know that she was also a nurse, which to them would mean that she soiled her hands like an untouchable!

ALL ABOARD

This ship wasn't meant to carry passenger, but the Greek Captain did just that by housing "paying guests." There were many who would travel on a cargo ship to save on passage, and he was there to oblige by skimping on crew. So on this trip he carried two Madras nuns, three Cochin Jews, a Gujarati family, three suspicious-looking Malays, and a few Europeans, including two French sailors rejoining their ship in Aden.

SAINTLY AMMA

It was 1947, and the British were finally leaving India; the Quit India Movement had made the impossible come about. Saintly Amma slowly let the air out of her lungs. It was a new world, and bold action was called for, or so she believed!

CHOCOLATE

i don't pretend to know anything, whether there is a wife waiting for me, or if there is anyone waiting at all, i just hope there are some incredable woman to share and explore the rest of our lives together whether it's one to infinity i have love for all of you, i just want to feel that love already!

THROUGH STUPES AND POULTICES, LINIMENTS AND DRESSINGS, CLEANSING AND COMFORT COMES CHRIST LOVE

The two young nuns-her brightest and fairest-were to be the torchbearers: Indians carrying Christ's love to darkest Africa-that was her grand ambition. In her papers, she reveals her thinking: Just as the English missionaries discovered when they came to India, there was no better way to carry Christ's love than through stupes and poultices, liniments and dressings, cleansing and comfort. What better ministry than the ministry of healing? Her two young nuns would cross the ocean, and then the Madras Discalced Carmelite Mission to Africa would begin.

FOR THE SECRET OF THE CARE OF THE PATIENT IS IN CARING FOR THE PATIENT

What U owe Shiva most is this: to tell the story. It is one my mother, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, did not reveal and my fearless father, Thomas Stone, ran from, and which I had to piece together. Only the telling can heal the rift that separates my brother and me. Yes, I have infinite faith in the craft of surgery, but no surgeon can heal the kind of wound that divides two brothers. Where silk and steel fail, story must succeed. To begin at the beginning...

ALL IN A DAYS WORK

Twin brothers, we slept in the same bed till our teens, our heads touching, our legs and torsos angled away. We outgrew that intimacy, but I still long for it, for the proximity of his skull. When I wake to the gift of yet another sunrise, my first thought is to rouse him and say, I owe you the sight of morning.

TIME TO PAY DUES R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Some nights the crickets cry zaa-zee, zaa-zee, thousands of them drowning out the coughs and grunts of the hyenas in the hillsides. Suddenly, nature turns quiet. It is as if roll call is over and it is time now in the darkness to find your mate and retreat. In the ensuing vacuum of silence, I hear the high-pitched humming of the stars and I feel exultant, thankful for my insignificant place in the galaxy. It is at such times that I feel my indebtedness to Shiva.

BORN IN AFRICA GEOGRAPHY IS DESTINY

Born in Africa, living in exile in America, then returning at last to Africa, I am proof that geography is destiny. Destiny has brought me back to the precise coordinates of my birth, to the very same operating theater where I was born. My gloved hands share the space above the table in Operating Theater 3 that my mother and father's hands once occupied.

SHIVA DOESN'T SPEAK IN METAPHORS OR FABLES

According to shiva, life is in the end about fixing holes. Shiva didn't speak in metaphors. Fixing holes is precisely what he did. Still, it's an apt metaphor for out profession. But there's another kind of hole, and that is the wound that divides family. Sometimes this wound occurs at the moment of birth, sometimes it happens later. We are all fixing what is broken. It is the task of a lifetime. We'll leave much unfinished for the next generation.

PRAISE STONE FOR DR. SHIVA

Dr. Shiva Praise Stone-to seek him out, to find his reflection in the glass panel that separates the two operating theaters, and to nod my thanks because he allows me to be what I am today. A surgeon.

ACCUSATIVE OF PART CONCERNED

Thou art blind-ears, mind, eyes alike. Handsome body, kind of heart. The women are dressed in linen smocks, with both forearm and upper arm bare.

ACCUSATIVE OF MANNER AND EXTENT

Do you from where you stand answer instead of them!

INTERNALS OF AN ANGEL

I'm ashamed of our human capacity to hurt and maim one another, to desecrate the body. Yet it allows me to see the cabalistic harmony of heart peeking out behind lung, of liver and spleen consulting each other under the dome of the diaphragm-these things leave me speechless. My fingers "run the bowel" looking for holes that a blade or bullet might have created, coil after glistening coil, twenty-three feet of it compacted into such a small space. The guy that has slithered past my fingers like this in the African night would be now reach the Cape of Good Hope, and I have yet to see the serpents head. But I do see the ordinary miracles under skin and rib and muscle, visions concealed from their owner. Is there a greater privilege on earth?

ADDIS ABABA

Knives are flashing and rocks and bullets are flying, and when I feel as if I am standing in an abattoir and not in Operating Theater 3, my skin flecked with the grist and blood of strangers. I remember. But you don't always know the answers before you operate. One operates in the now. Later, the retrospectoscope, that handy tool of the wags and pundits, the conveners of the farce we call M&M-morbidity and mortality conference-will pronounce your decision right or wrong. Life, too, is like that. You live it forward, but understand it backward. It is only when you stop and look to the rear that you see the corpse caught under your wheel.

REMEMBERING HIS WORDS ON FULL-MOON NIGHTS IN ADDIS ABABA

I followed. "Dr. Stone," I said, using his title thought I longed to cry out, Father! "An operation is his only chance," I said. In my heart I knew the chances was infinitesimally small, and the first whiff of anesthesia might end it all. My father put his hand on my shoulder. He spoke to me gently, as if to a junior colleague rather than his son. "Marion, remember the Eleventh Commandment," he said. "Thou shall not operate on the day of a patient's death."

MAN ON FIRE

When a certain someone needs bailed out they bill Germany. Lol don't think i don't gratefully appreciate all that you have done Mumford and Sons, but i think you've earned a break! So happily pass that torch there's a new flame! i promise to burn bright and make you proud!

EXPERIENCED TOUCH

Thirty years later, I am not known for speed, or daring, or technical genius. Call me steady, call me plodding; say I adopt the style and technique that suits the patient and the particular situation and I'll consider that high praise. I take heart from my fellow physicians who come to me when they themselves must suffer the knife. They know that Marion Stone will be as involved after the surgery as before and during. They know I have no use for surgical aphorisms such as "When in doubt, but it out" or "Why wait when you can operate" other than for how reliably they reveal the shallowest intellects in our field. My father, for whose skills as a surgeon I have the deepest respect, says, "The operation with the best outcome is the one you decide not to do." Knowing when not to operate, knowing when I am in over my head, knowing when to call for the assistance of a surgeon of my father's caliber-that kind of talent, that kind of "brilliance," goes unheralded!

AN OPERA SINGER TOLD ME

"What is the hardest thing you can possibly do?" she said when I went to her for advice on the darkest day of the first half of my life. I squirmed. How easily Matron probed the gap between ambition and expediency. "Why must I do what is hardest?" "Because, Marion, you are an instrument of God. Don't leave the instrument sitting in its case, my son. Play! Leave no part of your instrument unexplored. Why settle for 'Three Blind Mice' when you can play the 'Gloria'?" How unfair of Matron to evoke that soaring chorale which always made me feel that I stood with every mortal creature looking up to the heavens in dumb wonder. She understood my unformed character.

PQ

We come unbidden into this life, and if we are lucky we find a purpose beyond starvation, misery, and early death which, lest we forget, is the common lot. I grew up and I found my purpose and it was to become a physician. My intent wasn't to save the world as much as to heal myself. Few doctors will admit this, certainly not young ones, but subconsciously, in entering the profession, we must believe that ministering to others will heal our woundedness. And it can. But it can also deepen the wound.

GROWING ^

46 and 4 years have passed since my birth, and miraculously I have the opportunity to return to that room. I find I am too large for that chair now, and the cardigan sits atop my shoulders like the lace amice of a priest. But chair, cardigan, and calendar print of transverberation are still there. I, Marion Stone, have changed, but little else has. Being in that unaltered room propels a thumbing back through time and memory. The unfading print of Bernini's statue of St. Teresa now framed and under glass to preserve what my mother tacked up seems to demand this. I am forced to render some order to the events of my life, to say it began here, and then because of this, that happened, and this is how the end connects to the beginning, and so here I am.

WHEN ARE YOU COMING?

"When are you coming, Mama?" I would ask, my small voice echoing off the cold tile. When are you coming? I would whisper my answer: "By God!" That was all I had to go by: Dr. Ghosh's declaration the time I'd first wandered in there and he'd come looking for me and had stared at the picture of St. Teresa over my shoulders; he lifted me in his strong arms and said in that voice of his that was every bit a match for the autoclave: "She is CUM-MING, by God!"

MAD MEN

Grant me, I pray, ere that to be mad with this madness!

SLOWLY DYING

They are sick with all diseases! Overmuch am I afflicted with a wound wherewith a mortal man smote me. The sweetly smiling L. laughing a good un back he comes, enraged, fierce-eyed!

FING BULL SHIT

What am i lying about? If there is no queen waiting for me and no wedding and all this other bull shit then WTF are we doing? How about you stop using me to get what you need for a change and you give me what i want!

RIGHT ABOVE IT

Fake friends write the wrong answers and the mirror for me. That's why i pick and choose, i don't get shit confused *. i like my chicks in twos!

PQ

i don't like the smell of this food i don't have to pick one and that doesn't mean i'm not serious, far from it, i meant it from the moment i said it i love you both equally and i'm taking both of you home with me and that's the end of it! If you don't like it or agree with it i never asked for your opinion now did i so get over it!

CONTENDING

"to hit a six"; but a moment's thought will show that "a six" is not a genuine object; what the batsman really hits is the ball, but he hits it in a six-sort-of-way, "a six" is an adverbial limitation of "to hit" Cp in Greek to win an Olympic victory; what the man defeats is his fellow-competitors.

LAEDUNT

Laedunt has two objects, me external, quid internal. Cp. English, "I strike him a blow". Cp. our "play cricket", "fight ten rounds", dance a foxtrot", (dialect) "he sang a treat".

PQ

i should be seeing more out of both of you (Diana/Hera) i want, i need to feel you! Here i am stripping naked i'd do anything for you so grow up and lose the other husband Diana and your boyfriend Hera i'll kill em, guys maybe you want to back off if you know what's good for you! You all should be fighting over me even though there is more than enough for all of you! i don't know why we keep torturing ourselves we're making this harder than it needs to be i think we all deserve more from each other so lets me already!

IN MY WINDOWLESS ROOM

As a little boy of four, I took myself away to this windowless room to study the image. Courage alone could not get me past that heavy door, but my sense that she was there, my obsession to know the nun who was my mother, gave me strength. I sat next to the autoclave which rumbled and hissed like a waking dragon, as if the hammering of my heart had roused the beast. Gradually, as I say at my mother's desk, a peace would come over me, a sense of communion with her. I learned later that no one had dared remove her cardigan from where it sat draped on the chair. It was a sacred object. But for a four-year-old, everything is sacred and ordinary. I pulled that Cuticura-scented garment around my shoulders. I rimmed the dried-out inkpot with my nail, tracing a path her fingers had taken. Gazing up at the calendar print just as she must have while sitting there in that windowless room, I was transfixed by that image. Years later, I learned that St. Teresa's recurrent vision of the angel was called transverberation, which the dictionary said was the soul "inflamed" by the love of God, and the heart "pierced" by divine love; the metaphors of her faith were also the metaphors of medicine. At four years of age, I didn't need words like "transverberation" to feel reverence for that image.

LUSTING

On the plaster above the desk my mother had tacked up a calendar print of Bernini's famous sculpture of St. Teresa of Avila. The figure of St. Teresa lies limp, as if in a faint, her lips parted in ecstasy, her eyes unfocused, lids half closed. On either side of her, a voyeuristic chorus peers down from the prie-dieux. With a faint smile and a body more muscular than befits his youthful face, a boy angel stands over the saintly, voluptuous sister. The fingertips of his left hand lift the edge of the cloth covering her bosom. In his right hand he holds an arrow as delicately as a violinist holds a bow.

ROSES OVERTAKING

Matron Hirst's roses overtook the walls, the crimson blooms framing every window and reaching to the roof. So fertile was that loamy soil that Matron-Missing Hospital's wise and sensible leader-cautioned us against stepping into it barefoot lets we sprout new toes.

FLOWERS BLOOMING

Overnight, in that hushed silence, the meskel flowers bloomed, turning the hillsides of Addis Ababa into gold. In the meadows around Missing the sedge won its battle over mud, and a brilliant carpet now swept right up to the paved threshold of the hospital, holding forth the promise of something more substantial than cricket, croquet, or shuttlecock.

THE COMING

After eight months spent in the obscurity of our mother's womb, my brother, Shiva, and I came into the world in the late afternoon of the twentieth of September in the year of grace 1954. We took our first breaths at an elevation of eight thousand feet in the thin air of Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia. The miracle of our birth took place in Missing Hospital's Operating Theater 3, the very room where our mother, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, spent most of her working hours, and in which she had been most fulfilled.

STONING

And because I love this lite I know I shall love death as well. The child cries out when From the right breast the mother takes it away, in the very next moment to find in the left one its consolation.

ON A PRELIMINARY NOTE

It is important to remember that prepositions are merely additions to the case-meaning, it will be well to introduce them at this point (Family Reunion). Prepositions are adverbs which have become attached to (i) verbs, (ii) certain cases of nouns. My origin desire of sweet food seizes his heart round about. The next step is seen in the figure known as Tmesis. And he himself put on the shining bronze! Tmesis is a misnomer, for in early Greek it is not the separation but the combination that is significant. We can detect the survival of Sia as an adverb meaning thoroughly! Further evidence of the adverbial origin of prepositions is found in such words as . . .

ur REALLY TESTING MY PATIENCE

Seems like speakers are taking a hit around the world * my advice keep standing strong! i'd be lying if i said i didn't expect it * i can respect it, we are the best in the world Lord . . . but i hope UR not too serious . . . and i hope ur starting to rethink ur advances against my keen folk b/c my time is near and my bark is nothing compared to my bite so back off that's my family and closest relatives ur talking about; it really, really doesn't sit well with me and i take it very seriously u feel me!

FATHER AND SON RELATIONSHIP

We find in Antiphon: He strikes the man blows

i AM ALWAYS LIMITLESS

The verb to the particular object : "I see" is limitless, in "I see you" my seeing is limited. So with verbs of motion : "I go" is limitless, "I go home" give the limit. Used with all verbs, and even sometimes with adjectives and nouns, the accusative limits their application to some definite extent. Thus limitations in Space and Time are expressed by the accusative. The fundamental distinction is between the External and the Internal Object ; in the External and actions is directed to an object outside ; in the Internal the action does not go outside itself. "Fight the foe" embodies an External accusative, "Fight the good fight" an internal Accusative. "The foe" limits the working of the verb "fight" by means of an outside object ; "the good fight" limits the working of the verb "within that working itself" (i.e. "the good fight" is essentially in conception a subdivision of fighting).

NECESSITY OF LYING

The philosophic intelligence, in short, while it beholds the truth, admits the necessity of lying. Light corresponds to truth, but the eye is dull of vision; it can not without injury gaze on the infinite light. As twilight is more comfortable for the eye, so, I hold, is falsehood for the common run of people. The truth can only be harmful for those who are unable to gaze on the reality. If the laws of the priesthood permit me to hold this position, then I can accept consecration, keeping my philosophy to myself at home, and preaching fables out of doors.

VOTE OZ!

i WAS BORN TO LEAD!

JUDGMENT

Archbishop Tillotson, while he argues for the endless duration of punishment, suggests that the Judge has the right to omit inflicting it if he shall see it inconsistent with righteousness or goodness to make sinners miserable forever, and Burnet urges: "Whatever your opinion is within yourself, and in your breast, concerning these punishments, whether they are eternal or not, yet always with the people, and when you preach to the people, use the received doctrine and the received words in the sense in which the people receive them." It is certainly allowable to think that many an ancient timid teacher discovered the truth without daring to entrust it to the mass of mankind!

GENERAL IS THE CONFESSION

General as was the confession of a belief in universal salvation in the church's first and best three centuries, there is ample reason to believe that it was the secret belief of more than gave expression to it, and that many a one who proclaimed a partial salvation, in his secret "heart of heart" agreed with the greatest of the church's fathers during the first four hundred years of our era, that Christ would achieve a universal triumph, and that God would ultimately reign in all hearts!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

It seems to have been held that "faith, the foundation of Christian knowledge, was fitted only for the rude mass, the animal men, who were incapable of higher things. Far above these were the privileged natures, the men of intellect, or spiritual men, whose vocation was not to believe but to know!

SPANISH CHOCOLATE

People keep pressuring me to pick between a BIG MAC or Chicken, but i'm too versatile! i'm supposed to be general and picking one over the other would be like denying half of what makes me * ME! A Chicken-Big-Mac that's what i am and what U will get, U can take it or leave it, but i'm a keep doing me ;)- ! And i'm not choosing between Hera or Diana UR both coming home with me lol U should know that i will do whatever it takes i never surrender! How long do U think U can keep fighting me? Make it easier on yourselves and just give in to me! UR only postponing the inevitable because i always win in the end! i am and will be enough man for the both of U so drop the attitude though it is pretty cute. i want to have F-U-N so bad lol U don't even know it is going to be a long long honeymoon ;) !

DOTRINES OF MITIGATION AND OF RESERVE

The early fathers' doctrine of "Economy," or "Reserve.: Plato distinctly taught it, and says that error may be used as a medicine. He justifies the use of the medicine. He justifies the use of the "medicinal lie." The resort of the early fathers to the esoteric is no doubt derived from Plato. Origen almost quotes him when he says that sometimes fictitious threats are necessary to secure obedience, as when Solon had purposely given imperfect laws. Many, in and out of the church, held that the wise possessor of truth might hold it in secret, when its impartation to the ignorant would seem to be fraught with danger, and that error might be properly substituted. The object was to save "Christians of the simpler sort" from waters too deep for them! It is possible to defend the practice if it be taken to represent the method of a skillful teacher, who will not confuse the learner with principles beyond his comprehension. Gieseler remarks that "the Alexandrians regarded a certain accommodation as necessary, which ventures to make use even of falsehood for the attainment of a good end; nay, which was even obliged to do so." Neander declares that "the Orientals, according to their theory of oeconomy, allowed themselves many liberties not liberties not to be reconciled with the strict laws of veracity." Some of the fathers who had achieved a faith in Universalism, were influenced by the mischievous notion that it was to be held esoterically, cherished in secret, or only communicated to the chosen few, withheld from the multitude, who would not appreciate it, and even that the opposite error would, with some sinners, be more beneficial than the truth!

ST. BRANDON

Once every year, when carols wake on earth the Christmas night's repose, arising from the sinner's lake I journey to these healing snows. I stanch with ice my burning breast, with silence calm my burning brain; O Brandon, to this hour of rest, that Joppan leper's ease was pain!

SELF TAUGHT: THEY DIDN'T THINK HE COULD LEAD EITHER, HOW WRONG THEY WERE

i~THE DIVINER PRIEST 1.62F.

Messages come from him, borne by Hermes in the Odyssey and Iris in the Iliad. Iris is the rainbow, a beautiful icon of the gods' communication with man. Zeus sends dreams too, such as the one that misleads Agamemnon in Iliad 2. 'let us send', says Achilles (Iliad 1.62f.), 'for a diviner or a priest, or a dream-interpreter - for dreams too are from Zeus.' When we think of oracles we think of Apollo and Delphi. But Zeus too had oracles, at Dodona and Olympia. We first hear of Dodona from Achilles as he prays to a very distinctive Zeus: Zeus lord, Dodonaian, Pelasgian, dwelling afar, ruling over wintry Dodona; and around you the selloi dwell, the interpreters, unwashed their feet, their bed on the ground!

WEAK

There are indeed moments when we wish to attribute our thoughts to others. Clearest in this regard is the apology of Agamemnon to Achilles in the Iliad.45 . . . I am not responsible, but Zeus and Moira [the destiny he allots] and the Erinys [vengeful demon] that walks in the mist, who at the assembly implanted wild ate [destructiveness] in my mind on the day on which I myself took his prize [Briseis] from Achilles.' It is his own fault that he is describing, and he knows it. But it is how the world is, it is Zeus! If Zeus sends signs by weather and by the stars, and if he manages the whole course of human life, then it makes sense that he should sometime communicate with men in various indirect ways to express his will!

ZEUS AND THE KEY DAYS

Times of year we tell by our astronomical clock, watching constellations which Zeus himself has fixed in heaven as signs to us. This what Aratus tells us in his Phaenomena, a work of the third century BC consciously building on the work of Hesiod 400 years earlier. The Greek word for a sign is sema and revealingly it also becomes the word for a constellation. This leads us to a form of expression in the epic which takes 'day into the realm of fate! Homer speaks of such things as the 'due day(for death), evil day, pitiless day, day of slavery, day of freedom, day of return' (Schwabl 1978: 1022). It is Zeus who manages these key days, which determine our own thoughts and behaviour if we are to believe the disguised Odysseus:44 The thinking of men on earth is such as the day that the father of men and gods brings on.

BE GRATEFUL AND GIVE THANKS FOR THE PRIEST

If a drought lasts for a long time and by now their seed in the ground and their trees are dying up, in such circumstances the priest of Zeus Lykaios prays at the water [of Hagno, a spring on the mountain] and makes all the sacrifices that custom requires; he then lowers an oak branch to the surface - not deep into the spring - and as the water is stirred water vapor rises from it, like mist, and after a short while the vapor becomes cloud and draws other clouds to it until it makes rain fall on the land of the Arcadians.

KARA (HEAD) MULTIPLE ZEUSES

Mountains were the focus of Zeus cult elsewhere too. This explains for instance a Zeus Aenesios of Mt ainos on Kephallenia, the Zeuses who we see dominating mountains at the heart of states (pp.68-71), and a number of Zeuses, particularly in Boeotia, who are called Keraios, Karaios, Karios. This has led to an ancient Greek mythology of Karians (a nation of Asia Minor) living in Boeotia, but the explanations looks simpler - this is a god of the kara (head), i.e. the mountain peak, who in other states might be called akraios. Athens had a particular love of mountain sactuaries, as Pausanias notes (1.32.2), though offerings are fewer and farther between after 300 BC: On Mt Hymettos there was a Zeus Hymettios, on Mt Parnes a Zeus in bronze, on the 'not very big mountain' Anchesimos there was a Zeus too. Elsewhere there were altars of Zeus Ombrios, 'of rain showers', and Zeus Semaleos, 'who gives signs' - evidently weather signs, perhaps cloud formations or, more immediately, lightning and thunder (Parker 1996: 30-32). These shrines are not centres of habitation and we must therefore envisage processions of people and sacrificial animals to them. So in the case of Mt Olympus, it may well be that the procession would start at Dion. In another case, on Cos, there is an association of those who make a monthly, voluntary journey together to Zeus Hyetios ('of rain').43 One might also envisage special journeys in time of need, as happened at Mt Lykaion.

PQ

John Adams said study war and politics so that your children may enjoy fine arts and literature.

OLYMPUS

The idea developed that there two levels of air: the lower air (aer) and the upper fiery air (aither, as we have just seen). It seemed to Cook that a mountain such as Olympus, visibly rising above the rain clouds, must have been seen as reaching the very ether where the gods lived. It is a tempting thought. Certainly, ancient writers commented on how the ashes from sacrifice at extreme height on the peak of Mt Olympus were undisturbed by rain or wind, and letters which it was the custom to write in the ashes remained till the next occasion. 39 They surely had in mind the magical lines of Homer: Olympus, where they say the secure seat of the gods for ever abides; it is neither shaken by wind nor ever soaked by rain nor does snow come there, but it is utterly clear weather40, cloudless, and a bright radiance is cast over it and on it the blessed gods rejoice for all time.

ZEUS THE STEWARD

So, from praying for rain we reach a mythology of him fighting giants in cosmic battles for control of the universe. The electricity of the sky is awesome and invites cult. Places where lightning struck were very special and practically showed the god descending. Though his storms are conspicuous, we should not overlook his serenity. He lives in the aither (Latin aether orether), the brilliant upper atmosphere, fiery and shinning, up above the clouds. And if he is responsible for the downpours, he is also responsible for the droughts that occur or lack of them - of rains and of droughts Zeus is the steward (Isocrates, Busiris 13).

DPM

In several cases we see myth homing in on a moment fraught with danger for the virgin. She meets Zeus, the embodiment of the DANGEROUS AND POWERFUL MALE, perhaps the husband depicted as alien and illegitimate. Her beaty exposes her to him and the result is suffering and transformation. The stories focus on these vivid expressions of the end of maidenhood.

ZEUS = INCALCULABLE POWER

Zeus patrolling the world is an implementation of his function as controller of the world order and distributor of a sort of justice, of which we will see more below. The transformations and disguises doubtless each have their own origins, but they have in common that ZEUS IS AN UNSEEN FORCE OF INCALCULABLE POWER!!!* Only Semele seeks to see that power as it really is and her mortal frame cannot withstand the thunderbolt that is Zeus. We for our part need to be careful to recognize when that power is at work, in whatever form!!!*

NEGOTIATING BOUNDARIES

In the fifth century BC that literary interest takes off, in Pindar and Aeschylus. In art Thetis offers less interesting opportunities, however, than the theme of his abduction of Europa from Sidon (Phoenicia). There, Zeus is transformed into a bull riding the waves with Europa on his back. This is a favorite scene from as early as 560 BC (LIMC Europe 22) up to the wall-paintings of Pompeii. It must have figured, too, in early poems such as the Europeia of Eumelos. This is a momentous myth because Europa's brother Kadmos must search for her and in the process transform his nationality from Phoenician to Greek (Euripides, fr. 819 Kannicht2) - in order to found Theves. This myth therefore negotiates the boundaries between Europe (to which she gives her name) and Asia, between Greek identity and the identity of the Phoenicians, to whose mercantile supremacy the Greeks succeeded, travelling the seas for trade and discovery.

NEVER GIVE UP

KEEP FIGHTING FATHER!!!*

MY SOFT SPOT

What is left behind is the soft spot that Zeus has for his daughter of Nereus, colouring her appeal in Iliad1.

THE SON DESTINED TO BE STRONGER THAN THE FATHER

Zeus gave up his affair with the sea nymph Thetis because the son was destined to be more powerful than the father. Thus Thetis married Peleus, and Achilles, the greatest of the Homeric Heroes, was born.

MY SON NOT

But when we are talking about this sub-variety of Trojans, their leader is Aeneas, the son not of Zeus but of a might goddess of Asia Minor, brought into the Greek fold by being named as Aphrodite.

GRAIKOS HOW WE CAME TO BE KNOWN AS GREEKS

In northern Greece, his offspring included Thebe and Lokros, accounting for Thebes (Boeotia), and the Locrians (Locris). Thessaly was possibly the most important centre for Zeus-worship (that is why Olypus is on its borders) and specially exploited ancestry from Zeus: delightfully, his son Meliteus (Honeyman), was fed on honey by the bees, before founding Melite (Phthiotis). The Haemones (Pelasgiotis), the Manesians and the Myrmidons (the tribe of the Iliad's Patroclus) traced their ancestry back to sons of Zeus-Haemon, Magnes and Myrmidon. THeir neighbours the Macedonians did the same Macedon. In the northwest, his oracular site at Dodona (Epirus) goes back to his son Dodonaios, and the trib that gave the Romans and us the name Greeks goes back to his son Graikos.

i WILL BEGET HERAKLES

And if Zeus begets a Herakles by Asteria, he is really incorporating the birth of the Phoenician Herakles, Melqart, by the Phoenician goddes Astarte.

OF THE TREE: MY HELEN

She is the only mortal daughter of Zeus (Isocrates, Helen 16). Her sister Clytaemestra was after all merely the daughter of the mortal Tyndareus, but Helen is the daughter of Zeus himself. Helen is believed by some originally to have been a goddess, perhaps a tree goddess, Helen Dendritis (of the tree) in Sparta. A daughter of the sun, existing to be captured and then to be recovered by her brothers, the twin youth gods!

DANCE KOURETES DANCE

The Dioskouroi are found in cult as the Lords (Anaktes or Anakes) Dioskouroi, or just as Lords, and become interlaced with the Kabeiroi (or their alias, The Great Gods), the Kouretes (who danced in armour around the baby Zeus), and the Korybantes (also befotten by Zeus). Dioskouroi, Kourete, Korybantes - all youth (kouros/koros) gods, projections of youths as a class in society, trainee warriors. This is worth thinking about when looking at Zeus and the phatries at Athens (p.66).

i SON ALEXANDER

Zeus Ammon was the real father of Alexander the Great, rather than merely his father Philip.

5 FINGERED IRON!!!

Aigipan, and the Dactyls (Finger gods) of Mt Ida in Crete or Phrygia, dwarfs numbering five or ten like fingers, who invented iron-working.

CONSIDERING MY OFFSPRING

Theogony is the account of the births of gods as in the Theogony of Hesiod (around 700 BC). It is therefore a particular form of genealogy. To generate gods, you need a really important god as a father, and preferably DIVINE MOTHERS if a satisfactorily qualified god is to be the result; just as a citizen father and a citizen mother are required to make a citizen Athenian child. Zeus begets Apollo and Artemis, Aphrodite, Ares, Athene, Dionysos, Hermes. In fact he begets all the Olympian gods25 that are not his brothers and sisters - they are the children of Kronos (Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon). Genealogy makes the Olympian gods into a tightly knit system, a close group, a team: they are depicted as a specially close family. THese gods as a matter of historical fact all had their separate origins, mostly to us, but visible in their differing tradition mothers. Zeus's official mythological wife, Hera, is usually the mother only of Ares!!!

POSEIDON SPEAKS TO TRYRO

Rejoice, woman, in (this) love; as the year comes round you will bear splendid children, since not in vain are the beds of the immortals . . .

SILLY GIANTS 5TH & 6BC U WONT WIN!!!

It is left for later authors23 to piece together a story that the gods met the Gigantes in battle at Phlegra, a place in Thrace, out in the northern barbarous regions beyond Greece, off the map. To defeat them, the gods needed the assistance of two demigods, Herakles and Dionysos - playing the role of the helpers in the Typhon myth.

HIP HOP LITE

The Archaic Age, when this sort of poetry first flourished, was also the age of the hoplite ~ the heavily armed soldier who fought in formation with his fellows. As these men fought and died, sometimes the straps of their shields were decorated with metal bands of almost cartoon-strip scenes such as a hoplite might associate with. Found at Olympia where they were dedicated 2,500 years ago, several depict Zeus's battle with Typhon, the consmic parallel for the hoplite's work!!!*

MY SPECIAL ENEMY

Zeus's special enemy is Typh(a)on (Hesiod, Theogony 306), or Typhoeus (820-80 - the joints in Hesiod's text show rather badly). This monster shows up after the Titanomachy, embodying disorder and unintelligibility in his physique: 100 heads, which quite apart from other disagreeable aspects (snakiness), pour out a confusion of voices, between god-talk and bellowing bull (Hesiod, 831f)

JUSTICE

i MEAN IT!!! i DON'T CARE WHAT U THINK OR SAY, U WILL NOT PERSUADE ME!!! i WILL NOT WED HER!!!* i'VE WITNESSED HER INFIDELITY AT THE DROP OF A DIME, HER ARROGANCE, HER VANE'S, HER COUNTLESS GAMES TO HURT ME, AND HER STUPIDITY, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY i DID SOMETHING i'VE NEVER DONE UNTIL HER AND THAT WAS CHEAT TO FILL THE EMPTINESS AND i DON'T EVER WANT SOMEONE LIKE THAT IN MY LIFE EVER AGAIN!!! THAT IS WHAT GETS ME THE MOST AND IF IT MEANS COSTING ME EVERYTHING TO STAND UP FOR WHAT i BELIEVE IN * THEN SO BE IT, SHE DOESN'T DESERVE IT!!! SHE'S NOT BORN OF ROYAL BLOOD AND FAR TO WEAK TO EARN MY TRUST, LOVE, AND DEVOTION BACK . . . THE VERY FACT THAT IT HANGS OVER HER HEAD TAKES ANY FUN OUT OF BEING WITH HER!!! i'VE FORGIVEN HER AND i WISH HER HAPPINESS JUST NOT WITH ME CALL ME OLD SCHOOL, BUT i DON'T WANT SOMEONE WHO WILL ALWAYS HAVE A BOY FRIEND ON THE SIDE NOT THE ONE i AM MARRIED TO!!! SHE'S DIRT TO ME THAT IS IT!!! i WANT A ONE AND THAT IS MY FINAL ANSWER!!!* IF i AM TO BE WED, i AM YOUNG AND WISH TO HAVE MANY MORE THAN JUST ONE IF IT IS OF THE EXCEPTED CUSTOM!!!*

If Hera is not only responsible for my death but for ruining everything and everyone else * why should i take that risk she's not worth it not even close i wont have her and that's no joke! SHE'S NOT EVEN A 1 SHIT FUCK THAT i NEED i DESERVE SOMEONE WORTHY AND IT IS NOT HER!!!* i'D RATHER HAVE NO ONE INSTEAD!!!*

THE HYMN OF THE KOURETES

Yo! Greatest Youth [Kouros], I say hail!, Son of Kronos, all-powerful joy, Come! Leading the daimones [spirits,mini-gods] To Dikte annually make your way and rejoice in the song that we weave with the lyre and mix with flutes and standing we sing around your well-bounded altar Yo! [etc.]

THANK U UNCLE

As stories from different sites amalgamate, a rich and inconsistent mythology is formed. Zeus was perhaps suckled by a goat!!!

THANK U

The myth tells that in a cave on Mt Dikte the infant Zeus's cries were drowned out by the noisy weapon-changing dance of the Kouretes,16 evidently reflecting in the myth a ritual dance of warrior youth whose initiation practices were typically associated with caves. Thus a number of cult ingredients song, dance, youths, mother goddess come together and come into focus as a colourful myth almost paradoxically recounting the infancy of the father of gods and men, the King of the immortals. The only problem is that the caves in the east of the island do not seem to have been cult places - that element has come from Mt Ida in the centre of the island, or indded from Psychro.17

F~U

I'm sick of blonds I want my brunette!!!* FUCK U BITCH!!!*

NEVER IN MY EYES

Here the people of Argos say that Hera, when she is washed yearly, becomes a virgin. This is from the Rite which they conduct for Hera and is one of the secrets.

THE YOUNGEST IS THE BEST*

If he is father, that is not just a pleasing aspect of family life and it does not make him into some creator god on the Judaeo-Christian model - that came later. He is father because he has unquestion authority over the family of gods, and over a sort of extended household made up of both gods and men (Lloyd-Jones 1971:33). It is in a way proof of this that he is in fact, as we will see below a father of some gods and father of some men, notably those at the beginnings of nations. But of course he is the brother, surprisingly the youngest, of Poseidon, Hades, Demeter and of his wife Hera.

UPON ARRIVAL

Grain and oil appear to be the usual gifts for Zeus, whether Diktaian or not. A month, Diwios, is named after him, which survives in the month Dios of later Macedonia, Aetolia and Thessaly; and this must mean that his festival, evidently the Diwia, took place at that time of the year. So already we have many elements that will be familiar later: the god Zeus; an epithet associating him with a place, a mountain; a month, and therefore probably a festival; a precinct or special place, the Diwion; a priest; probably a consort (whether Hera or DIWION) and apparently a son, implying a mythology of a divine family. The son of Zeus has echoes in mainstream Greek Tradtion.

LED NOT BROUGHT

The Diwion [Zeus-shrine] and bring gifts and lead the porena to Zeus 1 gold vessel, 1 man; to Hera 1 gold vessel, 1 woman; to Drimios [we don't know who he is] Son of Zeus 1 gold vessel, 1 The porena must be gifts that walk - that's why they are led, not brought. They look like the man and woman - are they even human sacrifices?

BECOMING MORE SERIOUS

Thunderbolt, eagle, sceptre and now Nike - these are the attributes of Zeus by the fourch century BC. Sometimes too he holds a shallow libation-dish (Phiale) reflecting the worship that he himself received in domestic cult. He is now more normally statuesque in modern terms, and less a thunderbolt-hurler except on some coins. He has almost become more serious, in the wake of Pheidias classical and human conception and the philosophers demands.

CING

Don't think i haven't noticed U at my gym either!!!* HA HA.

i AM INDISPENSABLE

A KEY TO UNDERSTANDING ZEUS IS THAT HE IS AT ONCE A WEATHER GOD, THAT IS A GOD WHO LOOKS AFTER A PARTICULAR FUNCTION IN NATURE, AND ULTIMATE GOD, WHO IS CAUSE OF EVERYTHING. THIS IS ENTIRELY INTELLIGIBLE AND WIDELY PARALLELED, BECAUSE THE SKY FROM WHICH WEATHER COMES IS, QUITE SIMPLY, ABOVE US AND EVERYWHERE. THERE IS NO NEED TO TRACE AN EVOLUTION FROM A WEATHER GOD TO A SUPREME GOD - ALL THAT DOES IS TO WORK OUT THE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO (WHICH WE DO BELOW IN ZEUS FROM WEATHER TO FATE) OR WORSE SEPARATE OUT THE CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS OF HIS SUPREMACY. THE IMAGES OF THE THUNDERBOLT AND SCEPTRE DO ALL THE WORK THAT IS NECESSARY TO HOLD THESE TWO ASPECTS TOGETHER. THIRD, ZEUS IS ALSO PART OF A SYSTEM4 AT ANY ONE TIME: HE RELATES TO ALL OTHER IDEAS AND PICTURES THAT PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT THEIR LIVES AND TO ALL THE OTHER GODS. IT IS FROM THE TOTALITY OF GODS, NOT JUST FROM ONE OF THEM, THAT WE DEVELOP A SCIENCE OR THEOLOGY OF THE UNIVERSE. ZEUS, HOWEVER, UNDERPINS THAT SYSTEM AND IN A SENSE IS THE ONLY GOD THAT IS TOTALLY INDISPENSABLE!!!* HIS CHARACTER IS THEREFORE SPECIAL: HE IS REMOTE, INVISIBLE AND INSCRUTABLE!!!*

KEEP HATING

Alongside this is the lost language of ordinary people, who will have picked up elements of these other languages absorbed the art and watched the ritual and often performed it. As we can see from fragments of their language, they will have talked piously of the 'rain of Zeus' and would vigorously have cursed by him. All these ideas and performances swirled round the Greeks as they worshipped Zeus, and gave a depth of meaning to their activity!

1985:130f

Sheer power and supremacy - a vision so close to Otto's and Vernant's drive Burkert's Zues forward through every manifestation: all sovereignty among men proceeds from Zeus . . . Zeus stands above all faction . . . Zeus is therefore uniquely qualified to be the good of all Greeks . . . Zeus was the only god who could become an all-embracing god of the universe . . . (and for the philosophers) Zeus is the world as a whole (Burkert 1985: 130f.)!!!*

DISCOVERING THE OH BOY

Farnell can be seen as part of a long-drawn movement away from myth towards ritual and cult practice. This reflects the characteristic evidence of scholars: we move from a world where the prime material was creative literature - prose or poetry, read by people who were sensitive to it - away to a different world where the prime material was found by archaeologists, ethnologists and those who, in effect, quarried in literature.

i AM FIXED

Fixed-effect meta-regression assumes that the true effect size θ is normally distributed with \mathcal{N}(\theta,\sigma_\theta) where \sigma_\theta^2 is the within study variance of the effect size. A fixed effect meta-regression model thus allows for within study variability, but no between study variability because all studies have the identical expected fixed effect size θ, i.e. \varepsilon=0. ***Note that for the "fixed-effect" no plural is used (in contrast to "random-effects") as only ONE true effect across all datasets is assumed.***
y_j=\beta_0+\beta_1 x_{1j}+\beta_2 x_{2j}+\cdots+\eta_j \,
Here \sigma^2_{\eta_j} is the variance of the effect size in study j. Fixed effect meta-regression ignores between study variation. As a result, parameter estimates are biased if between study variation can not be ignored. Furthermore, generalizations to the population are not possible.

5 DECIONS ANALYSIS

Determine the value of each competing strategy.

SURGERY OR MEDICINE

WHEN PATIENT INPUT IS CRITICAL: The best decision may depend heavily on how an individual patient values life with a particular disability. For our patient SM choosing between surgery and medicine, the "right" decision may be critically dependent on his personal values for the potential health outcomes he faces.
WHEN IMPORTANT EVENTS OCCUR AT DIFFERENT POINTS IN TIME: Many patients value the present much more than they value the future; this time preference is easily forgotten when making decisions implicitly. How do we compare death resulting from surgery today with death resulting from cancer in the distanct future?

DECISIONS~DECISIONS~DECISIONS

*COMPLICATED, HIGH-STAKE SITUATIONS: The presense of multiple competing risks and benefits requires a formal, quantitative method to evaluate the optimal strategy.
*WHEN IMPORTANT DATA ARE NOT KNOWN WITH CERTAINTY: Decision analysis may reveal that a critical parameter is not well defined in the literature, rendering a single "best answer" unobtainable. Focusing the uncertainty on the missing variable rather than on the entire decision may permit a more informed choice by explicitly describing the effect of this variable on the outcome over a range of possible values.

WHAT LED ME TO THE IMAGINABLE

Another approach that is commonly taught focuses primarily on pathophysiologic processes: inflammation, infection, and ischemia to guide thinking about the imaginable list of diagnoses. As with use of only anatomic approach, use of only the physiologic approach can lead to omissions of potentially important and more likely diagnoses.

1st STEP IN THE ART OF MD

The first step in the art of medical diagnosis is learning to generate a differential diagnosis. This is simply assembling a list of all the possible causes that may explain your patient's symptoms and signs. A method commonly taught early in medical training is the use of a strict anatomic approach, which can be effective for certain types of diseases.

Cing FOR NEEDLES IN THE HAY STACK

VINDICATEd

Therefore, although there are different approaches one can use, a very helpful mnemonic that systematically includes most of the major categories is VINDICATE!!! To remember this mnemonic, keep in mind that after we've generated a differential diagnosis and used the techniques of refining probability, we will feel VINDICATEd!!! by obtaining the most likely diagnosis! This mnemonic combines anatomic, pathophysiologic, and systems approaches and can be applied successfully.

Ultimately i'm expecting U to make me wait and sweat it out down to the wire, i know it's b/C i have the greatest burden of truth it is all or nothing and FATHER U ARE THE ONE MAKING THE DECISION!!! IS MY SOUL NOT TRUE, MY HEART NOT PURE, AND MY INTELLECT NOT SOUND!!! The material will be learned, but I don't think that's the issue i think U see something that i'm missing and i don't want to disappoint anyone i'm worried that's all i'm not sure what U are looking for? Or what U C that is concerning . . . i'm not perfect and i don't think i'll ever be ready * But that's not what's driving me it's love and understanding of myself, my family, and everyone else . . .i'm lost what else do U wish me to endure?
