For our patient SM choosing between surgery and medicine, the "right" decision may be critically dependent on his personal values for the potential health outcomes he faces.
WHEN IMPORTANT EVENTS OCCUR AT DIFFERENT POINTS IN TIME: Many patients value the present much more than they value the future; this time preference is easily forgotten when making decisions implicitly. How do we compare death resulting from surgery today with death resulting from cancer in the distanct future?
